Last week the NEW area was hit with a cold front early in the week with some NE winds that started
shaking up the water temps a bit. By the weekend we had several days of West winds to then move
some warm water around. The result was somewhat unstable water temp and correspondingly fishing
was a bit tougher from day to day. The good news is our water temps before the weather shake up
were fairly stable.
Rock structures along the East shore in general like Vincent and Volks and Macco’s reef were all just a
little better fishing when anglers could venture out looking for Walleye. Both Jigging and Trolling
presentations caught fish. To the north a bit the Chaudoir’s Dock area up to Little Sturgeon Bay found
some anglers trolling the wind blow East shorelines from 10’ out to 25’ and finding areas with good
Walleye action. Crank baits like Flicker minnows were the best producing baits in Chrome patters in
that slightly cleaner water.
The Mud bite at times is still producing some catches from Geanos to Pensaukee. Rember to use your
electronics to locate schools of fish then get the baits like Harnesses or Flicker Minnows right above the
fish.
The Oconto Shoal continues to show signs of life, Again using your electronics to fin the fish as they
move around the structure from day to day. Jigging with Shiver Minnows and Spoons has been good
along with slip bobbers once you locate some fish. Trolling Cranks either on top of the ricks or off the
deep edges has also been good.
Perch fishing over all was a bit slower this last week with the off balance weather but this week of stable
conditions should get that fishing activity ramped back up again soon.
Please consider practicing selective harvest of both Walleye and Perch to help maintain the vitality of
our fishery. Musky fishing has been good casting bucktails and trolling Raz Shads. Remember with warm water temps do not keep that fish out of the water very long. Get you camera ready , take the picture and let them go. Always have the proper equipment like hook cutters, large net, jaw spreaders and hook release tools. They have to be 54″ to keep one, catch and release not in the grease, Yah, only at Smokeys!!!
