Smokeys weekly fishing report by Captains Claus ans Ruffolo 5/4/26

Mother Nature had some fun with Opening Weekend fishing here in WI. Sub-freezing temperatures for
opening morning then late day higher winds leading into gusty winds on Sunday. The good news for
Green Bay anglers was that overall, most had good to great fishing action.
University Bay and Deadhorse Bay both saw anglers trying their luck for Walleye. The water remains
fairly dirty, but some Walleye were had trolling #7 flicker minnows around the shallow shoreline areas
mostly. Brighter color patterns were better in the murky waters.
Working up the East shore, both North and South of Bayshore County Park anglers trolling from 6’ out to
18’ reported having some success. Both #7 and #9 Flicker Minnows were reported doing some damage
and a mix of Chrome Green and Blue along with the usual purple patterns all seemed to be productive.
Suamico Bay had reports of a few fish caught early but overall, the action there has been slower. The
Geanos reef area has seen a few anglers both trolling the shallow sand shorelines and around the reef.
Both have been producing a few fish again #7 Flicker Minnows was the preference. Angler looking to jig
were finding a few eager fish around the 6-8’ humps on the reef. Hair jigs in darker colors along whit a
jig and crawler both produced a few fish.
The Door County shorelines have continued to see good catches of post spawn Walleyes on and off the
past week. Casting hair jigs with Purple dominating the productive colors has been working for most
anglers. Trollers working 15-25’ of water have reported doing well on Rapala Husky Jerks and Flicker
Minnows. Trolling at slower speeds like 1.4-1.7 mph has been the best top trigger some bites.
Small Mouth Bass anglers have been reporting action continuing to improve. Finding some warmer
waters is key to getting some good action on these Pre-Spawn fish. Tube Jigs hair jigs and Jerk baits
have all had some catches.

Reminder Perch season remains closed until May 20 th and Musky season remains closed until May 23rd
Please consider a selective harvest methodology in your Walleye targeting this season. Pleases consider
releasing your larger Walleye, a good length limit would be 22”-23”.
Remember to take a kid fishing
