Musky season is here but it was a slow opening. We had an early spawn and with Memorial Weekend later this year it looks like most of the big fish moved out to the bay. We had reports of numerous 50 inch plus being caught in U-Bay, so they are still out there. Walleyes are still going strong on both east and west shores trolling crank baits and crawler harness’s. Perch are still being caught on the Fox and both the east and west shore of the bay. For more details and to find out what to use give us a call at 920 593 1749. Yah, only at Smokeys!!!

Excellent walleye fishing continues, with hot bites going in University Bay, Suamico, Deadhorse, and Geanos Reef.  Crankbaits behind planer boards, crawler harnesses, jig/crawler, blade baits, and rippin raps are all taking fish.  White Bass are working their way out of the Fox River, with edges of the shipping channel being a good place to find them.  Jigging has taken the most fish.  To the north, a good walleye bite has been found around Pensaukee, Oconto, and Green Island.  If you go, be safe, and as always, take a kid fishing.

The Perch are back in big numbers and yes there are alot of JUMBO’S out there. Both the east shore and west shore are great right now for perch and the Fox River by the 172 bridge has been a real hot spot. Walleyes are still being caught in U Bay, Bay Shore, frying pan shoal, Saumico and out of Geanos. Musky season starts on the 29th and we have been seeing some big girls out there spawning. Walleye fishing on Green Bay can you continues to be good to excellent, with many limit catches of great eating 15-18” walleyes.  Popular colors are white, purple, and custom #7 flicker minnows in gold/purple and white/purple.  Hot walleye bites were found at College Reef, Kidney Island rocks, Suamico and Geanos Reef.  With the perch opener coming this week, finding perch will be a high priority for many anglers.  Structure found on Vincent Point, Geanos Reef, off Dykesville, and the rock/weed areas of Oconto are great places to start.  Remember, if you go, be safe, and take a kid fishing!

We are getting all kinds of calls that the walleye bite sucks. What is happening right now is a bug hatch on the bay. The fish are gorging on the hatched larvae coming to the surface to land on your boats. Give is a couple of days at it will return to normal. Happens every year, Walleyes are still being caught on both shores trolling and jigging. Perch starts up this week and it should be good. Fishing over the last 7 days for walleyes has been good to excellent on Green Bay. While colder air temperatures and high winds have kept many off the water, those who have braved the waters have been rewarded with solid catches. Good eating size walleyes have been caught around the east shore of University Bay, Vokes Reef, Suamico, Geanos Reef and Bayshore. Trolling crankbaits and jigging with hair jigs and rippin raps have been the most successful presentations. Large white bass are now found in the mouth of the Fox River and are beginning to disperse into the Bay. To the north, an excellent bite around Oconto and Sturgeon Bay continues for both walleye and smallmouth bass. Casting jerk baits and tubes are taking the most fish. If you go, be safe, and take a kid fishing!

With these colder temperatures we are experiencing we are finding that the early morning bite is not as productive as late morning/afternoon. Once the sun has a chance to warm up the surface temps on the water it seems to make the fish more active. Walleyes are still being caught on the lower bay on the east and west shore. Vincent Point seems to be the hot spot right now either trolling or jigging. White Bass and crappies are still being caught in the Fox River and some nice northern pike are being caught by the warm water discharge by Metro Launch. Excellent walleye fishing during the on Green Bay existed in many places, as water temperatures begin to climb, and hungry post spawn walleyes begin to migrate from spawning areas. In the lower bay, a good bite exists at the rivermouth, in Deadhorse Bay, and University Bay. Trolled crankbaits, hair jigs, jig/minnow, jig/crawler, and blade baits all took fish in my boat. As we work north, the areas of Sturgeon Bay and Oconto also have a good bite going. Working shoreline areas and finding warmer water led to better catches. Same techniques as the lower bay apply. If you get out, make sure to take a kid fishing, and be safe!

Walleyes are still going strong on the lower bay trolling cranks. The hot spots have been University Bay, Vincent Point, Vokes and out of Bay Shore. Some walleyes are being caught jigging in the river fishing by the bridges. On the west shore fish are being caught out of the Saumico River and Geanos. If you like white bass the river is full of them, lots of fun to catch. Crappies and northern pike are still being caught by metro landing. There has also been numerous sightings of musky spawning by the shore, remember that the season does not open here until the 29th of May. To find out what lures to use give us a call 920 593 1749. Walleye fishing on Green Bay remains good. In the Sturgeon Bay area, many walleyes are spawned out, but a few egg wagons have yet to spawn. Casting presentations with hair jigs and rippin raps have been good. Trolling the shorelines also has produced many fish, with #7 and 9 flicker minnows producing the most fish. The shipping canal remains as a good option too, with live bait rigging suckers putting both pike and walleyes in the boat. Remember, the current walleye limit on the Bay is 1 fish 15” or bigger until Saturday May 1st, when it switches to 5 fish 15” or bigger. Be safe and always take a kid fishing.
