Smokeys weekly fishing report by Captain’s Claus and Ruffolo 4/30/24

Once again unstable weather has the spring fishing a bit stirred up late last week. Strong winds through
the weekend moved some water around and also kept many folks off the water.
The Fox River action for Walleye, continues to be slow, but some fish are still being caught both trolling
and jigging. White Bass action was very good over the late part of last week and the weekend. Casting
just about anything was good but jig/minnow or jig /crawler combos worked well along with any white
hair jig. Be prepared to tangle with a plethora of Sheephead also along the river.
Areas in University Bay have slowed for now but that activity should pick up as we move through this
week. Expect to find plenty of action up shallow along the sand bars and shorelines trolling crank baits.
The Suamico area should also continue to produce some catches if the weather will stabilize.
The Door County shorelines from Little Sturgeon south and from the Stone Quarry north have both had
some good days for anglers both casting and trolling. Casting purple hair jigs and darker goby colored
plastics were productive along with trolling Flicker Minnows and P-10’s in variations of purples. More
activity for Small Mouth Bass has been reported up near Sturgeon Bay in all the shallower bays as the
fish begin to look for warmer waters to begin their spring spawning moves. Jerk baits and Ned Rigs
were the predominate method of catching Small Mouth.
The Oconto area, walleye fishing has slowed mostly to the colder clear water after the multitude of
West wind days. Stable weather patterns should see that activity back to the positive side soon.
For any of your spring bait or lure needs stop in at Smokeys on the Bay, Jeff will hook you up with what is
needed. Shore dishing out of Metro on the wall has been producing large crappie and some nice pike.
Wisconsin general fishing opener is coming this Saturday May 4 th . Reminder that the Walleye daily bag
limit does not change to 5 fish with a 15” Minimum until Saturday. Also Perch season is still closed on
Green Bay until May 20 th .
Even though the Walleye Daily Bag limit goes up please practice selective harvest let the bigger fish go
to swim another day.
Be safe and tight lines. Yah, only at Smokeys!!!
