Not only was the weather hot, hot, hot this past week on Green Bay but smoke, smoke, smoke leading
to ½ mile visibility at times was the norm. Through the weekend surface water temps remained in the
low 80’s in most areas and that trend looks to remain for the near future.
The hot water has not deterred the fishing activity overall this past week. University Bay at times has
still given up some decent catches of Walleye. Trolling #7 Flicker Minnows continues to produce along
with Crawler harnesses around Kidney Island and College reef. Again, the brighter colors with the more
stained and dirty water have been good.
East shore Walleye activity around the reefs like Maccos, and Vincent point have been good at times.
Areas like Volks and 2 Mile have slowed down a bit. Jigging Shiver Minnows and search baits have all
produced some good catches of 15-20” Walleye along with a few bigger fish. Trolling #7 Flicker
Minnows in purples patterns over the tops of the reefs in the mornings and evenings has also produced
good catches of Walleye along with a few bonus Perch. Trolling Crawler harnesses adjacent to the reefs
has also been good for picking up a few Walleyes mid-day.
The Geano’s reef area has been decent for Walleye action when there has been a little wind. Both
cranks like #7 Flicker Minnows or Shads or harnesses with light bottom bouncers have been productive
around the 6-10’ areas. Again, mostly when there has been some wind. Some folks casting search baits
and jig and crawlers along with Shiver minnows are also finding a few keeper Walleye around the humps
on the reef.
The “Mud Bite” has had good days and some tougher days. Both cranks and crawler harnesses have
done some damage at times. The best depth has been from 28-32’ from Geano’s to Pensaukee. Do not
overlook the 20-25’ depths also as at times there have been active fish in that range. Use your
electronics to locate fish before setting up to troll. When the days were nice enough several anglers
have been out casting with Forward Facing Sonar and catching some of those hungry Walleye in the
mud. These fish have been hitting baits in the top 10-15’ of the water column most days even when it’s
been calm and hot.
The Perch bite continues to be decent in most areas. Use your electronics to stay on active fish. In
many areas with it being calm this past week the fish have been more spread out and not as schooled
up. Off the edges of the rock structures in 8’-16’ of water. Chaudoirs Dock area, Macco’s Reef, Volks
and Vincent reefs all on the east shore have been good. Geanos reef, and Oconto Shoal have also seen
some good Perch catches this past week. The best tactics have been dead sticking Perch rigs or drop
shot. Crawler pieces have been reported as being better than minnows as of late.
Reminder, the Chaudoir’s Dock boat ramp will be close until approximately September due to dredging
work.
