This last week was a bit of a weather roller-coaster ride, with everything from sweltering heat and
humidity to a few very chilly mornings and some north winds. Water temps from the previous week’s
highs in the low 80’s fell to the high 60’s in many areas. Of course that made for a couple days of
tougher fishing.
East shore Walleye activity overall had slowed a bit with the weather changes. Anglers are still
managing a few fish both jigging and trolling around Vincent Reefs Volks Reef and 2Mile reef. Those
areas have also seen a big increase in juvenile Walleye inn the 8-12” size from our 2025-year class hatch.
Trolling #7 Flicker minnows on windy days or in the morning or evening has been OK. Shiver minnows or
Jig and crawler presentations have been working for the casting crowd. Early AM and evening trollers
have been also getting some Walleye in 8’-15’ of water along the shoreline areas from Volks landing to
Dykesville. #7 Flicker Shads or Minnows have been producing.
The Geano’s reef area has been up and down for Walleye action. When there is some wind the activity
on top of the reef in 6’-10’ increases. Trolling harnesses or Flicker Minnows both have been producing
good catches along with all casting Shiver Minnows. If there is little to no wind the bite slowed.
The “Mud Bite” continues to be good Walleye Fishing. Trolling Harnesses, #9 or #11 Flicker Minnows
and or “Sharpshooting” with Live sonar have all caught fish out in the mud. Use your sonar to locate
schools and then work those areas. For the most part keeping your baits in the top 15’ of the water
column has been the best. There have been fish from 20’ of water out to 32’ on most days. Of course
there are plenty of large Sheephead and Catfish out there also to keep you on your toes.
The Perch bite is heating up as the warm weather sets in on us again. Off the rock structure edges has
been best most days. Volks Reef, Vincent Reef, Geano’s Reef, Macco’s Reef have all had Perch activity
around them. You may have to move around a bit to keep on the fish at times but you can be rewarded
with good catches of 9”-12” fish. Crawlers seem to be dominating the catches but do not rule out
minnows! Drop Shot rigs or dead sticks have outperformed slip bobbers most days. Set your rigs up to
keep your baits within a foot of the bottom due to our fairly dingy water clarity.
Reminder, the Chaudoir’s Dock boat ramp will be closed until approximately September due to dredging
work.
